Italian Tour 2012

Very pleased to be here in Italia with Peter Schwebes, Bernardo Guerra and Alessandro Lanzoni. Today is the first day of our 2012 Italian tour. We are rehearsing some new music and will be starting out early on Thursday for our first concert in Teatro Macerata. Stay tuned for some videos, pictures and audio from this week’s concerts!

Hot Sardines at Shanghai Mermaid

This is a recent picture of the 1920′s style band “Hot Sardines.” We played last Saturday at Shanghai Mermaid and it was a blast! I hope to be back playing with them in the future.

Nick Myers and Sonny Rollins

Writing this to everyone from Paris, France. Today is the second to last city on the Sonny Rollins tour that I am now a part of. What an honor it is for a young musician such as myself to be able to assist someone as prominent as Mr. Rollins. This gentleman has had a rich, long life and I am truly honored to be a part of that history. I have been learning every day on this tour and I can’t wait to get back to New York City and share my experiences with everyone.

Nick Myers Plays the Blue Note

This month I had to opportunity to play the Blue Note’s Late Night Groove Series with my band, JuiceBox. Imagine seeing a line of 80 people waiting outside the club for a concert that starts at 1:00 in the morning! It was a sold out show and a packed house. I couldn’t have been happier with the performance of the band. We were FUNKY and the audience was energetic and interactive. The house manager told me after the gig that he’d never seen an audience demand an encore from a late night band…

Stay tuned as we videotaped and also made an audio recording of this concert. I will be posting some of this footage in the coming weeks for those of you that missed the concert.

After that gig we were invited to play last weekend on September 10th at the Hiro Ballroom near the Highline in Manhattan. Another packed house! For the type of music we play with JuiceBox, it’s very inspiring to have a large crowd of people that are dancing and grooving with the music. All in all a good month so far for Nick Myers and also for JuiceBox!

Myers – Lanzoni Quartet in Piazza Degli Uffizi

I just returned home from an amazing experience traveling and playing in Italy. One of the main places we played was for the Notte Bianca in Florence, Italy where the Myers – Lanzoni quartet was featured as the headline group in the Piazza Degli Uffizi.

It’s great to be back here in Italia with my friends Alessandro Lanzoni on Piano, Bernardo Guerra on Drums and Gabriele Evangelista on Bass. The concert was truly astounding. If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience the Notte Bianca it is truly a thing to see. Thousands of people leave their houses and stay up all night in order to listen to music in some of Florence’s most famous and historic monuments and piazzas. To be playing as the headline quartet in front of the Uffizi museum is truly an honor.

The music we played was a mix of some of my songs and arrangements as well as compositions by Alessandro Lanzoni. To say we were well received by the audience would be an understatement. I love the authenticity and excitement of the Italian crowds. There were people at the front of the stage literally screaming for an encore. I felt like we were at a rock concert! I hope to back again as soon as possible.

Playing for Wayne Shorter

Recently I had the opportunity to play for one of my favorite musicians in the whole world, Mr. Wayne Shorter. I was selected to play at the same cocktail party where Mr. Shorter being honored for his recently awarded honorary doctoral degree from New York University.

Near the end of the gathering, he came over and listened to us play “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” I don’t think I’ve ever been that nervous playing in my entire life.

It is truly an honor to be able to meet one the most inspiring jazz musicians that ever lived. I can’t begin to explain what it means to me to be able to play for Wayne Shorter. He is one of the main reasons I moved to New York and has always been one of my most favorite person to listen to. Afterwards he gave me some encouraging words, “Nice deep sound there, keep playing….”

Peru and Costa Rica Jazz Festival
